How do I make a sliding (actually SLIDING) slideshow header

I'd like to create my own slideshow header (so an image gallery with an automatic right-to-left sliding animation (though if possible it'd also feature the option to press arrows or buttons or something similar to manually view the next slide as well), placed above a navbar) from scratch, in order to better understand the concept. Can anyone explain it to me? I'd like to use Javascript or jQuery for it (preferrably pure JS). I've already created pages with bootstrap slideshows, but I didn't really learn a great deal from it.
